THE SLOWEST GUN IN THE WEST  DVD

This is an innovative and hilarious western starring veteran comedians Jack Benny and Phil Silvers. The town of Primrose, Arizona is filled with outlaws. In desperation, the law-abiding townspeople hire the cowardly Fletcher Bissell III (aka The Silver Dollar Kid, played by Silvers) as their new sheriff. The townsfolk are convinced that law and order will be restored because the local outlaws will be too proud to gun Bissell down. This proves to be the case, because none of the outlaws wants to ruin his reputation by being "the man who gunned down The Silver Dollar Kid." In retaliation, the outlaws hire their own cowardly gunfighter, Chicken Finsterwald (Benny), to go up against The Silver Dollar Kid. Finsterwald's "style" of gunning people down theretofore amounted to knocking out an old lady's cane in a dark alley and shooting her in the back. Despite pressure from the townspeople and outlaws, both Finsterwald and The Kid manage to avoid confrontation until the final, surprising showdown in the street.PRICE £10:00+PP

THE THREE STOOGES  DVD

The Three Stooges: All the World's a Stooge gives a generous 124 minutes of seven Curly classics in a random order: "Grips, Grunts and Groans" (1937), "The World's a Stooge" (1941), "3 Dumb Clucks" (1937), "Three Little Pirates" (1946), "Uncivil War Birds" (1946), "Back to the Woods" (1937), and "Violent Is the Word for Curly" (1938). The shorts cover some familiar territory; "Grips, Grunts and Groans" is only the Stooges' 20th short in the Columbia series, and it is practically a rewrite of "Punch Drunks," the second. Here Curly is driven wild by a perfume rather than a song and is put into a wrestling ring rather than a boxing ring. Even the backscreen projection of the crowd is the same one used in the earlier film.

"Three Little Pirates" contains the famous "Mahah, Ah Ha" routine from their vaudeville days. "Back to the Woods" is one of their relatively rare costume efforts. The highlight of "Violent Is the Word for Curly" is a pleasant little vaudeville song about the alphabet. In "Three Dumb Clucks," Curly gets to play a double role. THIS A GREAT BUY FOR FANS OF THE THREE STOOGES PRICE £10:00+PP

BEST OF VICTOR BORGE  VHS

Victor Borge was a master at combining two seemingly disparate elements: comedy and classical music. While the Dane's dapper dignity fit the image of "longhair" music, Borge undercut it with broad physical comedy, clever spoofs, and off-the-cuff wit. A pioneer in the field of live comedy recordings, Borge is nevertheless best appreciated on video, and The Best of Victor Borge Acts One and Two captures a 90-minute concert that includes many of his most famous routines.PRICE £5:00+PP

Derek and Clive Get the Horn (1979)

cover

Directed by
Russell Mulcahy  VHS/DVD (ADULTS ONLY)

Writing credits
Peter Cook
Dudley Moore

By the time this film was shot and edited, Dudley Moore had earned success as a comedy actor and musician in the United States, while Peter Cook remained relatively less known in the USA. Peter Cook begged Moore "ad nauseum" to record one last comedy album featuring their cult-favorite characters Derek and Clive (to be called "Ad Nauseum"), a farewell to both their characters and their partnership. They were booked in a studio for three days. Moore had become so fed up with Cook's bitterness at his recent popularity that he failed to show up for the third day of recording and shooting. Moore looked down on Peter Cook and director Russell Mulcahy's intentions to market the film as a general release. This was done in any case...and the film was subsequently banned in England for many years and was forbidden from being shown. Ultimately, it was release on VHS in PAL format in the early-'90s and released to DVD later. It has still never been released in the United States, either theatrically or on video. Moore is quoted to have said, "The film would have most certainly earned an X rating for the sole reason of the language Pete and I used in it."
