Honeysuckle Rose        DVD

<><><><><><><><><><><>

Running Time: 120 minutes
Starring: Joey Floyd, Amy Irving, Slim Pickens, Dyan Cannon, Willie Nelson
Directed by: Jerry Schatzberg
PLOT DESCRIPTION
After displaying his easygoing charm in a number of television appearances and a showy supporting role in The Electric Horseman, Willie Nelson scored his first leading role in this romantic comedy-drama in which he (appropriately enough) plays a musician. Buck Bonham (Nelson) is a country singer/songwriter with a loyal following in his native Texas and the neighboring Western states. However, Buck hasn't yet had the hit record that would make him a star nationwide; in the meantime, Buck and his band keep up a busy tour schedule, much to the annoyance of his wife, Viv (Dyan Cannon), and son, Jamie (Joey Floyd), who would like to see Buck at home every once in a while. As Buck wonders if he should press on with his musical career or call it quits, his close friend and longtime guitarist Garland Ramsey (Slim Pickens) announces he's retiring, and suggests a good replacement -- his daughter, Lily (Amy Irving). Lily had a crush on Buck as a child, and now as a full-grown and very beautiful woman, her infatuation has only increased with time. Consequently, Buck must choose between Viv and Lily as well as his home and his career. Honeysuckle Rose was written specifically for Nelson, and his character bears more than a passing similarity to Willie and his life before the album Red Headed Stranger made him a star; the film also earned Nelson an Academy Award nomination for the film's theme song, "On the Road Again. KOJAK (PILOT EPISODE THE MARCUS NELSON MURDERS:2 THE CORRUPTER)  DVD
It may be old, but its certainly not dated, the storys are gritty and realistic, and still have the power to grab you, mainly due to the quality of the writing, and the excellent, low key performances of the actors, which prevent it looking like 70's kitch. An award winner in its day, and it's easy to see why.PRICE £5:00+PP

CITY FOR CONQUEST (JAMES CAGNEY)   DVD

When Peggy, hoping for something better in life for both of them, breaks off her engagement to Danny, he sets out to be a championship boxer, while she becomes a dancer in a nightclub (with sleazy partner Murray, as played by the commanding Anthony Quinn). However, tragedy soon strikes and it appears that the two might never be reunited.

SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL  DVD

The powerful imagery extends to characters as well as extraordinary cinematography. A fine cast turns in great performances all around. Beautiful b&w photography appears to be born of a long and co-operative association between director Michael Anderson and cinematographer Erwin Hillier. There is ample evidence of a director at work with a firm sense of purpose and the creative ability to pull it off. Unusual for its time in this respect. This film confirms what I've heard today's filmmakers (Scorcese and Spielberg) are saying--the work of Michael Anderson deserves much greater recognition. PRICE£10:00PP

THE BILL SHANKLY STORY

"Through the Darkness of Despair"

There was a smog so thick hanging over Anfield in 1959 that the roof of the famous Kop could hardly be seen, but in the back seat of a car in Manchester, a Ray of Hope was rising. Mr TV Williams had driven there to meet a certain Mr William Shankly. Bill had applied for the Liverpool job in the early 50’s but had failed to impress the board that he was the man for the job. Luckily for us Mr TV Williams had seen something that the others seem to have missed, “one of the biggest hearts in the game”.This is a story of a legend and a genius.Every Liverpool fan should own this dvd.

 Your Cheatin' Heart

THE HANK WILLIAMS STORY  DVD

As one of the major legends in country western music, you'd think there would be countless movies about the life and times of Hank Williams yet there have been surprisingly few. With the exception of an independent Canadian film, Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave (1982), Your Cheatin' Heart (1964) still stands as the only significant movie about the songwriter/musician. Filmed with the cooperation of Williams' widow, Audrey, the movie was a sincere attempt to tell Hank's story PRICE £7:00+PP

THE BEST OF THE  DEAN MARTIN VARIETY SHOW   DVD

"The Dean Martin Show" was, perhaps, the most thoroughly enjoyable variety series of the sixties, due, in large part, to it's legendary host. Dean Martin refused to take things seriously, on-camera, and his relaxed, flippant attitude seemed to bring out the very best qualities of his guests. Certainly it made his show the 'in' place for virtually every major performer of the era, PRICE £10:00+PP

NIGHT OF THE DEMON   DVD

Anyone who sees this film for the first time really needs to remember when it was made and what there was to compare it with at the time. In 1957 this film was a pioneering work. The subject matter hasn't been effectively dealt with since - despite the mammoth budgets available to today's film makers.

The film's success is in it's simplicity. Scientists try to expose a Devil Cult for being fraudsters. They profess their innocence and are told to do their worse - which is exactly what they do.

Director Jacques Tourner makes up for an obviously tiny budget by weaving an extremely disturbing atmosphere throughout the film's pivotal moments. Those dissenters who carp on endlessly about whether or not the demon should have been included are arguing about the wrong issue, which is whether or not Tourner managed to effectively scare his target audience with an essentially psychological beast from the depths of Hell. He easily achieved this without showing the actual demon, but it should however be noted that the very last shot of the demon where it is shown for the only time in profile tearing poor Karswell to bits, is the only representation of a devil that I have ever seen that sticks rigidly to the earliest known wood cuts of demons. All you oculists out there - check out your old books, this film might be more of the real deal than you give it credit for. Remember that in 1957, the British public were still reeling from the witchcraft murders of Lower Quinton and Hagley Wood (do your homework on these murders!)

I honestly believe that this film addresses the subject of Black Magic in a far more
sinister fashion than I have seen since. It is the 'Thinking Man's' Exorcist ... Watch it with an open mind !!!  PRICE £10:00+PP

 THE THREE STOOGES  DVD

The Three Stooges: All the World's a Stooge gives a generous 124 minutes of seven Curly classics in a random order: "Grips, Grunts and Groans" (1937), "The World's a Stooge" (1941), "3 Dumb Clucks" (1937), "Three Little Pirates" (1946), "Uncivil War Birds" (1946), "Back to the Woods" (1937), and "Violent Is the Word for Curly" (1938). The shorts cover some familiar territory; "Grips, Grunts and Groans" is only the Stooges' 20th short in the Columbia series, and it is practically a rewrite of "Punch Drunks," the second. Here Curly is driven wild by a perfume rather than a song and is put into a wrestling ring rather than a boxing ring. Even the backscreen projection of the crowd is the same one used in the earlier film.

"Three Little Pirates" contains the famous "Mahah, Ah Ha" routine from their vaudeville days. "Back to the Woods" is one of their relatively rare costume efforts. The highlight of "Violent Is the Word for Curly" is a pleasant little vaudeville song about the alphabet. In "Three Dumb Clucks," Curly gets to play a double role. THIS A GREAT BUY FOR FANS OF THE THREE STOOGES PRICE £10:00+PP

To great applause, Reagan announces that the AFI film archives contain copies of every James Cagney film. DATELINE DIAMONDS     DVD

London swings in this nostalgic British movie from 1965, which stars legendary mod-rock group the Small Faces. The band members play themselves, although the story is an entirely fictional tale of diamond smuggling, rock & roll, and blackmail. The Small Faces' manager has racked up some gambling debts, and decides to use his prize assets to surreptitiously smuggle diamonds out of the country on a boat that broadcasts a pirate radio station. Admirers of Steven Marriott's band will find plenty of Small Faces songs sprinkled liberally throughout the soundtrack, while the  plot is mostly played for laughs. The band's acting is thankfully kept to a minimum--the story primarily focusing on the thieves who obtain the diamonds--but this is a must-see movie for any fans of the Small Faces PRICE £10:00+PP

ONE STEP BEYOND  (EIGHT EPISODES)   DVD

One Step Beyond was mainly filmed at M-G-M Studios, Hollywood, and partly at M-G-M British Studios, Borehamwood, Herts. It premiered nine months before The Twilight Zone, and was also known as Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond. All episodes are directed by Newland himself, a dab hand whose trademark is subtle, balletic camera work.
This series fed the nation's growing interest in paranormal suspense in a different way. Rather than creating fictional stories with supernatural twists and turns, this program sought out 'real' stories of the supernatural, including ghosts, disappearances, monsters, etc., and re-creating them for each episode. No solutions to these mysteries were ever found, and viewers could only scratch their heads and wonder, "what if it's real?" PRICE £10:00+PP
