Film Description Witty and naturalistic, Riff-Raff has strong messages for workers in Thatcher's Britain: drugs, day-dreams and horoscope escapisms are out, mutual support and retaliation, in! There are vintage Robert Carlyle and Ricky Tomlinson roles, plus an unforgettable foreman who sees laziness everywhere except in his own tea-leaves. PRICE £8:00+£1 PP
The second film in Terence Davies’s autobiographical series (TRILOGY, THE LONG DAY CLOSES) is an impressionistic view of a working-class family in 1940s and 1950s Liverpool, based on Davies’s own family. The first part, DISTANT VOICES, opens with grown siblings Eileen (Angela Walsh), Maisie (Lorraine Ashbourne) and Tony (Dean Williams), and their mother (Freda Dowie) arranged in mourning clothes before the photograph of their smiling father (Pete Postlethwaite). Soon after, the family poses in a similar tableau, but for a happier occasion – Eileen’s wedding. While relatives sing at her reception, Eileen hysterically grieves for her dad, and recalls happy times of her youth. Tony and Maisie’s memories, however, are more troubled. Davies intermingles and contrasts scenes like the family peacefully lighting candles in church with the brutal man beating his wife and terrorizing his young children. In STILL LIVES, set (and filmed) two years later, the siblings are settled in life, but not all happily. For Eileen, relief from her drab existence comes only when singing at the pub. With his skillfully composed frames and evocative use of music in place of dialogue, Davies creates a lovely, affecting photo album of a troubled family wrestling with the complexity of love. GUMSHOE, the directorial debut of British director Stephen Frears, is an entertaining salute to Hollywood's classic private eye movies. Albert Finney stars as Eddie Ginley, a second-rate British vaudevillian who has always been a fan of detective books and films. He finally gets the chance to make his fantasies a reality when there's a murder and he plays "gumshoe" to find the killer, much to the chagrin of his level-headed brother (Frank Finlay) and sister-in-law (Billie Whitelaw). In the process, he gets mixed up with the members of a black South African liberation movement, a mysterious and sinister "fat man" (George Silver), patterned after character actor Sydney Greenstreet, and an attractive American married woman (Janice Rule). As Eddie comes closer to solving the mystery, the film offers numerous plot twists, along with a lot of laughs PRICE £10:00+£1 PP Dr. Susan Hayward makes a tragic mistake when she leaves her Canadian practice to follow her ailing, married lover to England. PRICE £8:00 + £1 PP Great film, great performances from Imelda, Ricky and especially Johnny. He's hilarious. For Ricky Tomlinson this is a welcome return to form after Once Upon a time in the Midlands. He's back in his home town, his home environment and it really comes across in his performance. He doesn't need to worry about his accent so he can just get on with performing. For Johnny this is also a lot better than Sex Lives of The Potato Men, in this movie he is more himself, I think he identifies with the character and he does look like he's enjoying it. Some of the shots of Liverpool are awesome, and there's some great air to air scenes towards the end and a dramatic rescue from the Mersey. 'The Fruit Machine' is one of the most original and refreshing films I have seen, combining a terrific storyline and a superb cast of actors, with outstanding performances from Robbie Coltrane, Robert Stevens and Claire Higgins; as well as the two young protagonists. This film is in turn witty, stylish and absolutely terrifying and deserves much more recognition than it received. Price £7+£1 postage
The Long Day Closes is the story of eleven-year-old "Bud." A sad and lonely boy, Bud struggles through his days. With cinema as his main source of solace, he haunts the local movie-house. All the while, his family looms large in our peripheral vision as do the menacing bullies of his school, but Bud is the center of attention both from the camera's angle and from his doting family. With a gray background, the film fuses clips and audio from classic movies into Bud's dreary childhood and brings it to life with an elegance Bach would bring to your home movies. The overall effect is a montage of memory which seems to ignite flashes of recognition in the viewer.PRICE £8:00£1 +PP
